Crowns And Dentures

Are you looking for help with how to restore your smile permanently? Whether you have a  missing single or multiple teeth or have a slightly different oral health and hygiene situation, crowns and dentures can be helpful to you. However, it is important for you to know the differences between dental crowns and dentures and which one is best suitable for you.

What Are Crowns?

Dental Crowns ( commonly known as caps ) are custom dental prosthetics that are usually used for covering a damaged tooth or after a Root Canal Treatment. They are fabricated after the dentist has taken an impression of the teeth or tooth that are required to be covered. Dental crowns  are of following types based on the material used to fabricate them :

  • Ceramic or All Ceramic Crowns: Generally, they are used for front teeth as they can be easily blended by the dentist with the natural colour of your teeth.
  • Porcelain fused to metal crowns or PFM crowns: these have an inner core of metal which is covered by a layer of ceramic. These dental crowns provide a strong and durable bond.
  • Zirconia Crowns : These are the most advanced and are fabricated with CAD CAM technology and are excellent in esthetics and strength.
  • Base metal alloys: They provide superior corrosion resistance and minimal reduction of what they cover.
  • Gold/Precious alloys: They combine copper and gold with a wide range of other metals that would not wear away at the tooth underneath.

The following factors need to be considered before  choosing the best possible crown for a particular patient:

  1. Location of the tooth in the mouth.
  2. How much of the tooth structure is visible while speaking and smiling
  3. Amount of tooth structure remaining / extent of damage.
  4. Opposing tooth -natural or artificial.
  5. Position of the gums and shade of the surrounding teeth.

What is a Dental Bridge ?

When a single tooth or few teeth are missing, crowns can also be used to replace missing teeth by taking support from the adjacent teeth. Such joint crowns which replace one or more missing teeth are called Bridge. Depending on the number of teeth to be replaced you can have  three to six unit bridge.

What Are Dentures?

Also referred to as false teeth, dentures can be defined as removable prosthetic dental devices that are designed to replace a few or entire set of missing teeth. There are four varieties of dentures:

  • Complete or  full dentures: They are custom made and placed in the patient’s mouth after all of their teeth have been removed and the gums and surrounding tissues have healed. Complete denture mimics the colour and appearance of natural teeth and gums. They are usually given after the gums have completely healed post all the teeth have fallen or extracted.
  • Immediate full dentures: These dentures are customised and created before the remaining teeth are removed. They are fitted into the mouth immediately after the removal of the tooth. These dentures allow patients to avoid going without teeth while they are healing but they generally need to be relined within a couple of months.
  • Partial dentures: Basically they are used where there are a few missing teeth and that’s why they are called partial dentures. These prosthetics can be described as a removable alternative to bridges that can be attached to a metal framework that gets support from  the remaining natural teeth.
  • Flexible Denture : these are the most advanced and comfortable removable dentures which have a flexible base and no wires and clasp to take support. They cause minimal tissue irritation and have superior aesthetics and are unbreakable. Flexible dentures can be both full or partial.
