Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontists are Dental Specialists, who undergo special training and hence braces treatment should be taken by an Orthodontist and not general dentist.
Orthodontic treatment involves correction of irregular/crooked teeth. Age plays an important role in deciding the commencement of the treatment, however with newer appliances treatment is possible at almost all ages. But a problem corrected at the right time makes the treatment stable/simple and prevent long treatment duration.
There are two broad categories of patients seeking orthodontic treatment
- Children (age 8 years and above.)
- Adolescent/young adults.
1. Children-Orthodontic treatment is carried out:
- When either the upper or lower jaw is growing too much or too little
- When a patient has buck-tooth, bunny-rabbit like appearance, has spaces crowded, irregular teeth, or bad bites.
- Harmful habits such as thumb/finger/lip sucking or nail biting.
Age – Check up after 8 years is mandatory.
Duration of treatment – Varies from few months to 2 years depending on severity of the case.
Tooth movement – Pressure is applied on the teeth by a brace or bracket attached to the teeth which are connected by special wires.
Number of appointments – Initially appointments are more frequent. Once the appliances (braces) are in place, the adjustments are needed every 3-4 weeks.
2. Adolescent/young adults:
- Take treatment that misses out on braces during the younger age.
- Have Severe Problem with jaw bones and not just teeth (jaw surgery in addition to braces).
- Want to improvise the smile and overall facial appearance.
Types of braces
- Removable appliances: usually given for minor corrections and short duration of time.
- Fixed braces: they are of following types:
- Metal braces: These are conventional stainless steel braces attached to the teeth through which the wire runs. Over the years the size has been made small to make them comfortable to the patient.
- CLEAR or Ceramic braces: are a cosmetic alternative to metal braces as they blend with the teeth. Clear braces are slightly delicate and more brittle than metal braces.
- Lingual/Invisible braces: are the most recent which custom made for cosmetic conscious patients are are. Fitted behind the teeth, and are not visible. Lingual/ Invisible braces can be used on patients of any age and are increasingly popular in middle aged patients who want dental treatment without getting noticed. Treatment with Lingual braces is slightly more demanding both for the orthodontist and the patient. Simplismile is one of the few clinics in India offering this treatment option to its patients.
- Clear removable aligners Invisalign: may be used to gradually move teeth into their final positions. Aligners are generally not used for complex orthodontic cases, such as when extractions, jaw surgery, or palate expansion are necessary.
Care with Braces
- Things to avoid
- Crunchy foods: popcorn, chips.
- Sticky foods: éclairs, mars, 5-star, aampapar, chewing gum.
- Hard foods: nuts, candy, ice cube
- Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots.
- Brushing Care
It’s more important than ever to brush and floss regularly when you have Braces. Improper brushing would mean frequent visits to the dentist for a professional cleaning.
- Slight tenderness/soreness
This is absolutely normal during the initial stages of treatment usually lasting for few days. Teeth also tend to be tender after adjustment appointments as the appliances are activated routinely.
- Loose or mobile teeth.
This may happen during the treatment which gets corrected on its own after the treatment is completed.
- Broken/loose bracket or wire
This can happen during the treatment accidentally or if the instructions are not followed by the patient. This is not an emergency but requires immediate visit to the clinic.
